Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful break. This week we have got straight back into lots of learning, most of the children have come back with super attitudes to their learning!
In literacy we have been hooking with the book, ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’, this ties in with this half terms topic ‘Ship ‘Ahoy, Help I’m Sinking! The children thought carefully about what they knew about the main character Mr Grinling. In Thursday’s lesson we learnt how and when to use exclamation marks. The children then wrote some speech bubbles as the seagulls in the story. These were fantastic and all children used exclamation marks correctly and used some super adjectives to describe such as ‘scrumptious’, ‘delicious’ and ‘fantastic’. We will continue to hook with this book next week with the children writing an independent recount of Mr Grinling’s day.
In maths we have been focussing on place value. Children have been using the language of place value such as digits, tens and units. The children then used practical apparatus to partition 2 digit numbers into tens and units. Next week we will continue with this theme using written methods to partition numbers.
This week’s Star of the Week is Joash! Joash always puts in 100% in everything he does. He is a real asset to Year 1 and a pleasure to have in the classroom.
Please continue to keep reading at home with your children whenever possible; accessing Reading Eggs and Mathletics and practicing spellings (although no spellings have been sent home this week as we will be recapping some of the spellings learnt in the Autumn term!). You may have noticed that your child’s book level has changed following reading assessments at the end of last term. Please also make sure children bring book bags every day; PE kits MUST be in school on a Monday; spelling test is on a Thursday.
Have a great weekend and all the best to 2015!
