We have had a great week in Year 1. We have enjoyed doing lots of science as it has been Science Week. We linked this with our ‘Animal Kingdom’ topic and have learnt all about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. We sorted different animals according to their diets and thought of some of our own. We even handled REAL fish to look at their bodies and to investigate whether trout are herbivores, carnivores or omnivores.
The children really enjoyed it on Thursday when Mr All Cock and some former pupils from Allerton High School came in to work with us. We learnt all about rockets and had a go at making some of our own! Joel’s rocket definitely went the furthest!
On Thursday we did some super observational drawings of animals using pencil crayons. We had to look carefully at the shapes and colours. Today in Literacy we wrote some great animal poems about our animals. These included lots of great scientific vocabulary!
In maths this week we have been focusing on ‘finding the difference’. The children used cubes to help with this task. Next week we will be focusing upon fractions of numbers.
This week’s star is Euanson for a super observational drawing of a bird.
Next Thursday is parents evening. Please book through the school website on the online appointment system. Please also continue to check out our class blog via the website. This is regularly updated with pictures and you can get a real glimpse into what your children have been doing in year 1. The children would also love it if we received comments on our blog about their learning. Thank you to all those parents who have been accessing the blog and leaving comments!
Please continue to keep reading at home with your children whenever possible; accessing Reading Eggs and Mathletics and practicing spellings. Please also make sure children bring book bags every day; PE kits MUST be in school on a Monday; spelling test is on a Thursday.
Have a great weekend!
